Mural Painter Seeks Donors

Through my Brazilian percussion band, Batala , I have connections to so many different people, events and projects. One of my Batala sisters passed on this plea for funds to help mural painter, Joel Bergner create a mural to raise awareness about domestic violence in our communities. I checked out his paintings and immediately fell in love with the bold colors and simplicity of line. I hope some of my friends will also appreciate his style and the seriousness of this issue and help see this project to its completion. If you would like to donate, please see the link in the upper corner of my blog and thanks so much !

Retro kitchen delights

For as long as I can remember I've had a real weakness for retro/vintage crockery. Left to my own devices and without thought or care for life essentials such as food, bills and rent, I could quite happily part with significant chunks of my budget on more vintage kitchen accessories than I could possibly ever hope to use in a lifetime.

I guess part of my love of pieces such as these is the sense of childhood nostalgia they evoke. The colours, patterns and images prevalent in pieces by Hornsea, Staffordshire,Denby, Turi Gramstad Oliver and the like are a tangible link to grandmothers china cabinets, fathers mugs, old storybooks. It is a style and form of artwork that must have imprinted on me at an early age, and that I still respond to with a feeling of lighthearted joy.
It is with no small measure on happiness that I can claim not to remember the last time I bought a 'new' item of crockery, and that my kitchen shelves are bursting with a mismatched assortment of flea market finds.
I plan to start experimenting with some of these design elements in a series of sketches/collages soon.

1. Ceramic pestle and mortar,2.Creamer,3.Pots,4.Owly tea,
5.Tea for 3,6.? 7. Hornsea mug collection, 8. Hornsea mugs ,9.?

Apologies for the couple I forgot to make note of....

Fredericktown of yesterday

If you're heading to Washington County Agricultural Fair this weekend set aside some time to stop in the historic stone John White House owned and operated by Washington County History and Landmarks Foundation. The organization has put together an exhibit of old photographs taken in towns along the Monongahela River Valley. The video, above, shows a number of them from Fredericktown, Pa.

Superior 140 : 7 kitten motifs

It's time for some DOW tea towels. I love to stitch a kitteh, and these ones are so sweet they will give you the proverbial toothache! Little kittys doing household tasks, we can never get enough of them. Neither it seems could Superior brand transfers, for I have a lot of transfers from that particular company that feature cats.

Kitty is ironing, hanging out the washing (wearing roller skates no less), singing at church, sweeping the floor, mending clothes, having a tea party, and on a tricycle doing the shopping. All the time she has a little friend doggy or a stuffed toy to help her. The relationship between cats and dogs in transfer-land always amuses me, as it has little relation to real life cat-dog interaction. Unless of course, in this transfer below, the doggy is about to come and nip her on her posterior. That would be like my animals - Lola can't see a cat bottom go past without chasing it.

Of course, like all good homemakers, she's providing tea for all (that's one of my founding principles, "tea for all") and little stuffed teddy, kitty and bunny are happy to play along. As the pattern says, these are meant to be for days-of-the-week towels, but they'd look cute on children's quilts or bed linen as well. Whilst I don't want to muscle in on the Vogart hyperbole, in my opinion:
These darling designs are quick and easy to sew, and a choice of gay, bright colours will make your towels come alive and add fun to your modern kitchen. Children will love their own towels stitched with Miss Kitten and her friends, and a set will make washing hands no longer a chore! Just stitch these designs and instantly you will become more attractive, and they will bring good fortune and friends into your life. Your home will be beautiful, your children, beaming with health, rosy cheeked and perfectly scrubbed and well behaved, and your husband will cherish the perfect homemaker that he married.
Ooops, think I'm getting carried away now.... help me!......argh....

The more-modest memorial to a president

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The 32nd president of the United States who ushered the nation out of the Great Depression didn?t want to be remembered postmortem with a pretentious monument on the National Mall.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt made his wishes clear four years prior to his 1945 death in a conversation with a friend, then-Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, that he wanted to be memorialized with something simpler than the Washington Monument or Lincoln Memorial.

Placing his hands on his desk Roosevelt said, ?If any memorial is erected to me I know exactly what I should like it to be,? according to an obscure brass plaque near Ninth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Roosevelt then said he wanted a stone block in his honor without any ornamentation about the size of his desk placed in the grassy area in front of the federal Archives Building, the plaque indicates.

That president's desires were fulfilled on the 20th anniversary of his death April 12, 1965, by a group of his associates, But that would be outdone in 1997 with the installation of a his statue, along with one of his dog, Fala, in a 7.5-acre memorial in D.C. tracing the dozen years he represented.

So much for honoring his wishes.

Museum highlights the gruesome side of illegal drugs

A grim reminder at the DEA Museum in Arlington, Va., of the consequences of abusing drugs. (Scott Beveridge photo)

By Scott Beveridge

ARLINGTON, Va. ? A fake stiff is placed under a white sheet on a gurney suggesting a morgue at the federal Drug Enforcement Agency?s museum near the nation?s capital.

The disturbing scene is a cold reminder that death is ?what happens when you take too much,? the display indicates in this odd tribute to America?s drug war.

Unlike Washington Monument across the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., visitors do not face a long line to get inside the DEA Museum at 700 Army Navy Drive in nearby Arlington, Va. On the Friday morning leading into the Fourth of July weekend, there are just three visitors in the building whose interior is shielded by black tinted windows suited for a drug dealer's Cadillac Escalade.

Just beyond the metal detector at the side entrance are glass display cases whose contents focus on marijuana. One of them protects a brick of pot so old it has lost its color. Another holds a bevy of pot-smoking bowls and pipes and even a cute bong handcrafted from a plastic Honey Bear bottle.

Further inside another display focuses on saxophone player Milton Mezz Mezzrow, who introduced cannabis to Harlem in 1929. He argued the drug ?improved their music,? possibly coining a phrase so often repeated by musicians to follow him in the drug-fueled 1960s and 1970s.

Prominently displayed down the hall is an old-fashioned clandestine pill press, the kind used by drug mixers who specialized in dealing in bootleg narcotics.

Another display honors Operation Scorpion, which uncovered Pablo Escobar?s lucrative cocaine shop in the Colombian jungle in what became known as the Tranquilandia bust of 1984. The DEA used satellite technology to track a huge shipment of ether there based on information received from a tipster in New Jersey. The Escobar case became the most-infamous bust in DEA history as it helped to bring down a cartel that netted $25 billion a year.

On a lighter note this museum boasts a hip pair of green snake-skin platform shoes worn by an undercover agent working Detroit in the 1970s.

And then it turns quite serious around a glass case containing a black 9 mm submachine gun used nowadays by agents battling the heroin comeback, among other drug-related issues.

Here there is a gruesome crime scene photograph of a man who died in 1995 from inhaling fumes at a meth lab where someone was carelessly cooking the drug in San Diego.

That helps to explain why anxious tourists are not rushing to get inside this place.

Crazy eyes

Donkeys always make such easy photography subjects. Odds on they'll wander up to the fenceline, pull a stupid face and the rest is up to you...
One of the problems with photography in England is the extreme narrowness of a lot of the rural roads. While I'm driving around with one eye on the road and the other on potential photo ops, I need a third eye to spot any potential spot where I can pull up. The size of some of the roads here can make driving a very interesting gamble...

Interview on Beads Perles

I was contacted recently for an interview on the beading blog Beads Perles and today my interview was published. I'm honored because this seems to be the ultimate resource for interviews with talented beadweavers from around the world. The blog is in Spanish with the interviews published in both Spanish and English. I guess I could compare my answers to the Spanish and learn a few more words !(I have a lazy ongoing project to learn Spanish) Good thing I have it bookmarked now because I hope to get caught up with reading all the interviews one day !

Modern Motifs of Mexican Trend

aka "My best friend went to Mexico and all I got was this tiny sombrero"*

Yes stitchy friends, here's your erstwhile blogger managing a post...although I can't feel guilty because a) so many other great bloggers regularly share stitchy goodness and b) I still don't have a scanner.

Mexico is on my mind - literally:
...As my best friend recently returned from two weeks in Mexico and brought me back a wee present. Hope I'm not scaring you with my pic!

I haven't been to see all her photos yet, and for those of you without your own sombrero (because I know you're jealous) I present "fiesta motifs for colorful touches of Mexican gaiety". You know your breakfast nook wants it.

Apparently:
"Your needle will fly along the simple sitches of these motifs of Mexican flavor. Gay up your kitchen with Mexican-inspired dish towels and pot holders. Put a variety of these designs on curtains and table linen in the breakfast nook to add charm to informal meals. Delight the bride-to-be on your gift list with hand-made guest towels, refreshment napkins, luncheon sets or dresser scarfs reflecting in these designs the happy Fiesta spirit of our South-of-the-Border neighbors."

I'm keen to see if my friend's holiday snaps include women with baskets of fruit on their heads, giant cactii, boys eating bananas, and fighting cocks (actually sounding "gay-er" by the minute...oh dear! Come back readers...please...**) But this pattern assures me that these are common South of the Border capers.

Men wearing rugs will give you flowers:

Doves, cactii and maracas abound:

But the scariest thing in Mexico are the deadly attack parrots!

Watch your fruit girls.

Embellishing the Runway (with beads !)

Project Runway season 9 is in full swing, and this year, I decided (last minute) to join in the fun of designing accessories for each week's winning outfit and posting them in a Flickr group called
Embellishing the Runway. I knew about it last year from my beading friends on Facebook but didn't think I could keep up at the time. This year seems right so I joined a day before the first week deadline. I managed to create a simple bracelet which captures the colors of the winning design by Bert Keeter. I used a basic four bead herringbone stitch which works up quickly and chose some greys and orange (the closest thing I had was more of a pumpkin color). The winning design for this week seems to have stirred up alot of controversy and I'm late starting so it looks like some midnight beading sessions are in order this week ! More pictures posted in the coming weeks (fingers/beading needles crossed !)

Woo-hoo ! I'm in the COCO MoCA

Conan Necklace, originally uploaded by ambrosianbeads.

My beaded Conan pendant got selected for the online gallery of artwork depicting Conan O'Brien and his various images and logos. Last summer I made a peyote stitched pendant (started off as a bracelet, but I procrastinated) and I wore it to the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television tour that Conan did while he was off the air. Team Coco started a Flickr group for people's artwork (they totally stole that idea from me, I started my group first !) and selected different works in all media. There is a Facebook LIKE this page button for my piece, but the link is wrong. If you click it, you end up LIKING somebody else's piece ! Grrrr !
